Question:
Is there no one here who has any advice, experience,
strength or hope to share about drug allergy in a
BF newborn?
Answer:
I am penicillin allergic. So is my son (who was once a BF newborn). My
daughter (my current BF newborn), we don't know yet...
I saw the original, Esther, so it certainly came through my ISP. I wish I
had some information or advice to share with you, but I don't. I've just
never had your situation arise. They have their magazine, _New Beginnings_, archived and there may be something
there for ya. Also, there is an FAQ.
Otherwise, I'll keep my eyes open for you. I know you need info much sooner
than later, though!
Well, if the pediatrician didn't think the reaction was dangerous, it
seems to make sense to keep nursing and see if it recurs. I would,
however, make sure that's ok with the pediatrician (assuming the ped is
also interested in your maintaining the nursing relationship and isn't
going to just say "wean" for the sake of covering his or her ass).
Sorry I don't have any better information. It happens to be the case that
my son and I are allergic to the same drugs, so he would never have been
exposed via my milk.
Not yet, anyway. This particular episode took me by
surprise, as the suspect medicine is one to which I,
hubby, and three older children (who nursed while I
took it) have never had any reaction but the intended
beneficial reaction.
